Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded on the 11th of August 1973, and is the youngest of Lisbon’s three state Universities. Integrated within a framework of expansion and diversification of higher education, the University adopted a new model within the Portuguese system that stressed interdisciplinary approaches, technological developments while, at the same time, safeguarding offerings in traditional academic domains including medicine, sciences and humanities. The fragment on UNL’s logo states that "every city divided against itself shall not stand", calling to unity, beyond all the diversity of the institution, metaphorically represented by the word "CIVITAS": city of knowledge, community of scholars, a square where knowledge flows, with the goal of increasing the social capital of education, in benefit of the country.

FCSH-UNL – Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas - FCSH) forms part of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The Faculty is a legal person in public law, with academic, pedagogic, administrative and financial autonomy. The Faculty's mission is one of public service to improve the academic level of citizens and, in particular, Portuguese citizens, in the areas of social sciences and humanities. In keeping with this mission, the Faculty aspires to the following aims:

a) excellence in teaching and research in the specialist areas of social sciences and humanities, both at a national and international level;

b) a clear commitment to innovation and interdisciplinarity;

c) the establishing, spread and support of a humanistic culture;

d) providing services to the community in these same areas.

FCSH has 25 research units where around 200 research projects are developed (fundamental and applied investigation). It has 14 undergraduate programs, 10 post-graduations, 48 Masters and 25 PhD Programs in disciplinar and interdisciplinar domains. The main areas of education and research are Anthropology, Communication Sciences, Political Science and International Relations, Geography and Regional Planning, Philosophy, History and Archaeology, Art History, Foreign and Portuguese Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Linguistics, Musicology, Sociology.

The internationalization of the research and education are key features of our institution. FCSH generates knowledge with social impact, and does so in a culture in which proximity and closeness between faculty and students are almost unique in the national higher education system. We are around 6000 people in this community, counting students, faculty, researchers and collaborators.
