Children of ethnic migrants in schools of Krasnoyarsk  were in the focus od study within the work on Tempus project.  The study includes 21 expert opinions.

An analysis of the expert opinions of teachers of Krasnoyarsk allow concluding:

In most schools of Krasnoyarsk (57.2%) surveyed by the teachers-experts the number of children having  migrants background  does not exceed 10%. In 19% of the schools we analyzed  the number of such students is 11-20% and 9.5% of the experts indicated that there are 21-30% and more than 30% of children of ethnic migrants in the schools. Most of the children having migrant background come from Central Asia (Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kyrgyz) and Asia (Armenians, Azerbaijanis). Minimum number of children with migrant background are the Georgians, Ukrainians, Tatars, Uighurs, Kazakhs, Moldovans and Chinese.

 

The majority of children of ethnic migrants while studying at school exhibit national and cultural specific features to their classmates. 62% of the experts think these children do it often, and 28.6% of experts think the children do it in rare cases. Russian students mostly positive or neutral apply to such manifestations. 57.1% of teachers-experts pointed that there is positive attitude of Russian schoolchildren to such national characteristics of children having migrant background, and 23.8% of teachers-experts said the attitude is neutral. Thus, experts suggest that the situation in schools associated with the attitude of Russian schoolchildren to the manifestation of national and cultural specific features of migrant children is generally positive.

Behavior of children having migrant background at schools of Krasnoyarsk mostly corresponds to the rules. According to most experts - teachers, these children do not stand out in the school community and follow school rules the way other pupils do. At the same time 14.3% of the experts pointed out the tendency of children having migrant background to deviant behavior.

At Krasnoyarsk schools children having migrant background in general are integrated into school community and there is minimum of conflicts between the Russian schoolchildren and children having  of migrant background. Experts point out that the differences between Russian schoolchildren and children of ethnic migrants are usually not an obstacle to establishing friendly relations between them. Thus, 66.7% of respondents indicated that children of ethnic migrants do not pay attention to the differences between them and Russian students and they have both Russian pupils and representatives of other ethnic groups in their social circle.

The level of discussion of ethnic issues at Krasnoyarsk schools (by the pupils)  is relatively low and is 38.1%. The topics raised in the course of such discussions are usually associated with educational issues, leisure activities (music, sport, etc.), school life, culture and history, and plans for future. However, among the teachers-experts who participated in the study there is no consensus regarding the level of discussion of national issues among the schoolchildren.  28.6% of respondents reported that there is no such discussions at their schools. 33.3% of teachers-experts found it difficult to express their opinion.

The level of conflict between pupils at Krasnoyarsk schools on the basis of interethnic relations is low. Only 19% of teachers  stated there were such conflics. At the same time 71.4% of the experts indicated that at their schools there were no conflicts based on interethnic relations among.

Experts state that the level of language adaptation of pupils having migrant background in Krasnoyarsk schools is relatively high. Children of ethnic migrants mostly use Russian in communication with classmates and do not experience serious difficulties in understanding. Only 9.5% of the experts indicated that in their schools children of ethnic migrants poorly understand Russian language and use mostly their native language to communicate with classmates. The children of ethnic migrants at Krasnoyarsk schools in general are integrated into the school society, contact Russian students, but in some cases are experiencing some difficulties. 66.7% of respondents reported that in their schools children of ethnic migrants willingly and actively communicate with Russian students. 33.3% indicated that children of ethnic migrants in their schools are experiencing some difficulty in establishing contacts with Russian students, they meet difficulties in their communication with Russian students sometimes.

Indicators of educational success for children of ethnic migrants are at the same level as the indicators of Russian children and lower. 52.4% of the experts stated that the educational outcomes children having migrant background are lower than educational results of other pupils. 47.6% of respondents indicated that in  their schools pupils having migrant background have educational outcomes of the same level as other pupils. The level of involvement of children having migrant background in learning activities in their schools, according to teachers-experts is on  the average level: about half of the children of ethnic migrants are highly involved in studying, the other half are the pupils who are lagging behind and have  poor learning motivation. Most experts pointed out that among pupils having migrant background there is a considerable amount of pupils having low motivation to study and low grades.
