June 23 Siberian Latvians, Lithuanians and Estonians celebrated Midsummer Day (Ligo).

The celebration program included:

•Midsummer bonfire

•Traditional round dance and folk songs

•Ethnic concert

•Master classes on weaving wreaths and baskets

•Ligo food and drinks

•Finding a fern flower

      

 There is a belief that nobody  can sleep until dawn at Ligo – to protect himself for the entire coming year. If compared to Christmas and Easter the holiday has much less to do with the church celebrations. Most of the ancient pagan customs are associated with Ligo night. Perhaps the main tradition on Ligo is the Bonfire. Since ancient times people believed that the fire was able to protect against evil forces.
